Camillus had a hard childhood, and by his teenage years, he was argumentative and proud. He had to go to a local hospital for his diseased leg, but he was so unkind they asked him to leave. He spent the next several years getting in and out of trouble. Then he heard a priest preach about conversion, and Camillus felt God’s grace inspiring him to change his life.
Camillus still went to hospitals because of his diseased leg, but he was a different patient now. He began taking care of others or spending time with them so they would not be afraid or lonely. He founded a religious order of brothers to take care of the sick. At the end of his life, he left his own hospital bed to see if other patients needed anything.
